that week following up to New Year's...

…is usually the worst week of the entire year. A breakup never tops it, other bad news cannot top it. The week following up to New Years is always the worst week of the year. Not because there’s confusion between which work to defer to the next year, but I find that there is always some sort of tension in the air. People fight. People cry. People get antsy. People just act different.

My previous experiences with the week following up to the New Year has always been troubling. Last year, I got into a horrendous fight with a former loved one. The year before that, loved ones fought with one another. There are emotions that find themselves spilling out during this final week, almost as if you’ve been shaking a bottle of a carbonated beverage all year and waiting for this specific week to open it up. An explosion so unexpected, unnerving, and extremely confusing. Why wait to release your emotions this week? You had the whole year! Yet, it is almost like an annual tradition for things to fall apart one last time. In order to close this chapter of my life, I must be enraged, I must be hypersensitive, I must not be my usual self. The end-of-the-year monster awakens itself, rubbing its eyes, ready to breathe out fire.

The end-of-the-year monster goes back to its deep slumber on New Year's Day. Routines revisit, and new ones knock on the door, welcoming themselves, hoping for an extended stay. My yearly "new routines" have been similar year after year: work out, talk to my friends more, be the most unapologetic version of myself. I usually accomplish 2 of 3, and I hope to accomplish all 3 this year once I get my bad knee checked. Isn’t that funny? A bad knee in your 20s. Someone yell at me to set up that doctor's appointment!

I hope you all have been having, and will also be having, a better week than me. Unfortunately, I feel the negativity creeping up in me, and I’ll be off social media for the rest of the week to sit with my thoughts and figure out why this happens on an annual basis.

Have a healthy and happy New Year, dear reader. See you soon!
