STOP TRYING TO FIND THE "PERFECT FIT" !!
NEWSFLASH: Mass garment makers create for the masses, not just for you.
Every item of clothing produced today by a big brand is not designed to fit you. You may think it fits your proportions, but if you really ruminate about it, it probably doesn't. A shirt may be suitable for the size of your torso, but it could have sleeves that are a centimeter longer than your arm. I can live with slightly longer sleeves! You may claim. But one day, it may bother you that what you're wearing is just... a little... off.
One may think this is the fault of the brand. How dare they design clothing that fits others and not me?! Here's the thing: no brand is designing with any specific body measurements in mind! Not yours, not mine. Instead, they go off average measurements. This ensures that it will fit most people, but perhaps it might not fit you, specifically.
The best way to personally solve this issue is by tailoring it to your own fit. While pricey, it is alway worth it. I believe the fashion industry as a whole tries to mitigate fit issues with spandex, elastic, and belts, but it isn't always flattering. Imagine: a tailored suit jacket with a cinched back. Ick! Perhaps I am starting to develop a theory that mass-market brands purposely make ugly clothing so you can buy clothing that isn't ugly, but then we will have to discern what makes a garment ugly versus not ugly, and all of that opinion, as well as this very written piece, is subjective.
I'm not the only person that thinks this way either. I stumbled upon this fabulously written Twitter thread by Cora Harrington (@lingerie_addict) that reflects the same sentiment. The key tweet from the thread:
"I don’t know how we’ve arrived at a place where people want Shein prices with a bespoke fit, but we need to vacate it post-hastily."
Nothing gets on my nerves more than individuals expecting a garment, let alone a garment with their specific measurements in mind, for the price of a pizza slice. As previously stated, off-the-rack clothing are created for many people in mind, and therefore, will never fit your measurements. Also, we've only lived with off-the-rack clothing for approximately 50 years! People would actually get their garments tailored, whether done by themselves or by a professional in town.
If you want to save yourself some money, stop trying to find the perfect fitted garment! Instead, take the garment to a tailor, or have the garment made for you, also known as going bespoke. Long live tailoring!
